How Much Water Stocks at NMMC’s Morbe Dam, Know Here

Date:

Navi Mumbai: The Morbe Dam, which supplies water to Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas, currently has enough water to last for 111 more days, or until approximately August 24. The recent rise in temperatures has begun to impact the region’s water supply, leading the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to urge citizens to conserve water.

Navi Mumbai is the second city in Maharashtra, after Mumbai, to have its own water reservoir. The Morbe Dam, owned by NMMC, can store water up to a height of 88 meters, with a total capacity of 190.89 million cubic meters. Water from the dam, along with supply from the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation), is distributed across various sectors in Navi Mumbai and the Panvel Municipal Corporation areas. In total, around 487 million liters of water are distributed daily to various locations, including Kamothe and Kharghar.

Last year, the catchment area of the Morbe Dam received satisfactory rainfall, but the increasing heat this year has prompted concerns over depleting reserves. Despite these challenges, the NMMC assures that current water levels are expected to last until late August, given the daily water consumption patterns.

The NMMC has also implemented a range of measures to prevent water leakage, although incidents of water theft have been reported in some areas, further complicating the situation. Authorities continue to address these issues in an effort to secure the water supply for the city.

Thanks to the Morbe Dam and the meticulous planning of the Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai is currently able to avoid the water shortages being faced by many parts of the state. While rural areas struggle with long distances to fetch water, the residents of Navi Mumbai are reassured by the city’s self-sufficiency in water supply.

With rising temperatures, the municipality remains committed to ensuring a sustainable water supply and is urging all residents to use water responsibly.
