Harming Trees in Navi Mumbai? Be Ready to Pay Rs 10,000 Fine

Date:

Navi Mumbai: In a bid to protect the city’s greenery, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has announced strict penalties for those damaging trees by nailing advertisements or installing electrical lighting. The civic body has observed a growing trend of such harmful practices, which not only weaken trees but also pose a threat to the environment.

To address this issue, the NMMC Tree Authority passed Resolution No. 7461 on January 27, 2025, stating that individuals, businesses, or organizations violating the rule will face a Rs 10,000 fine per tree. The enforcement will be carried out by the Assistant Commissioner and Tree Officer.

Protecting Navi Mumbai’s Green Cover

Officials have warned that nails, staples, and electrical fixtures cause severe damage to trees, making them vulnerable to infections and decay. Excessive artificial lighting also disrupts the natural ecosystem, affecting birds and insects. “We are taking strict action to preserve the city’s green cover and discourage harmful activities,” said an NMMC spokesperson.

Civic Body Urges Public Cooperation

The NMMC has appealed to residents, businesses, and advertisers to refrain from defacing trees and instead contribute to the city’s environmental conservation efforts. “Protecting greenery is a shared responsibility. We request all citizens to support our initiative,” the official added.

With this strict enforcement, the NMMC aims to ensure a healthier, greener future for Navi Mumbai while sending a strong message against tree damage.
