In a bid to save delivery time and embrace new-age technology, the India Post‘s Maharashtra Circle has successfully conducted a drone delivery trial in the hill station of Matheran. For the first time, a drone transported a parcel from Karjat to Matheran — a distance of 23 kilometers — in just 15 minutes. The drone carried a parcel weighing around 9 kilograms to Matheran and returned with another package.

Matheran, situated about 800 meters above sea level, is known for its hilly terrain and heavy rainfall. Typically, it takes 1.5 to 2 hours to cover the distance by road. With a population of approximately 5,000, Matheran faces daily logistical challenges due to limited transportation options. The toy train, a popular but time-restricted mode of transport, only runs during the day. Vehicles can reach only the boundary of Matheran, after which travel must continue on foot or via e-rickshaws — increasing both time and cost.
Plans to Expand Drone Deliveries Across Remote Areas
The drone delivery service is being developed to serve remote and hilly regions where transportation is difficult and time-consuming. This is the first drone delivery trial conducted in Maharashtra by India Post. The drone used is capable of carrying parcels weighing up to 20 kilograms.
“We are in talks with more companies to conduct additional trials. Drone deliveries offer a faster and more efficient way to transport parcels,” said Amitabh Singh, Chief Post Master General, Maharashtra. “We plan to fully launch this service within the year.”
In today’s era of rising competition and rapid growth in e-commerce and quick commerce, India Post faces the challenge of maintaining relevance in the delivery segment. With logistics costs becoming a critical concern in a fast-expanding economy, drone technology presents a promising solution to enhance efficiency and reduce operational expenses.
