Final Phase of Mumbai Road Concreting Underway: No Barricades After June 5, Says BMC

Date:

Mumbai: The final phase of the cement concrete roadwork across Mumbai has begun, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) setting clear deadlines to ensure smooth roads before the monsoon. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar has directed that all concreting work be completed by May 20, 2025, enabling curing and finishing to conclude by June 5, 2025.

“No barricades from the Roads and Traffic Department should remain on any road after June 5,” Bangar instructed. He emphasized that citizens must experience safe, pothole-free, and traffic-ready roads ahead of the rainy season. Bangar also ordered the immediate deployment of necessary machinery and manpower to complete the works on schedule.

The BMC has undertaken micro-planning to ensure the cement concreting of roads is completed by May 31, 2025. On May 6, Bangar reviewed the ward-wise progress at the BMC headquarters. The meeting was attended by Chief Engineer (Roads and Traffic) Girish Nikam, deputy chief engineers, executive engineers, and assistant engineers from 24 wards.

Bangar stated that a specific completion date has been assigned to each road project. “No concrete road work should be ongoing after May 31. Focus on completing junction-to-junction stretches. Excavations have already been prohibited,” he said. He warned that if concreting continues beyond May 31, the timeline could extend past June 15 due to required curing and finishing periods. To prevent delays, no new concreting should commence after May 20, and ongoing works should be either completed or stopped at the nearest junction.

Engineers have been instructed to regularly inspect work sites and ensure contractors meet deadlines. Any challenges must be immediately escalated to senior officials. Bangar highlighted that the priority is not just completing work but avoiding pending works and minimizing inconvenience to citizens.

Additionally, engineers must ensure level roads, especially at junctions of concrete and asphalt. Measures to prevent waterlogging and slippery surfaces during the monsoon were also stressed. Bangar directed checks and cleaning of nearby stormwater drains and culverts to remove any construction debris obstructing water flow.

The BMC aims to ensure monsoon-ready, safe roads without obstructions or delays, reaffirming its commitment to public safety and convenience.
