Ahead of the Diwali festival, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Maharashtra has issued strict guidelines for food manufacturers and sellers to ensure that festive food items, including sweets, khoya, paneer, ghee, and dry fruits, are safe and free from adulteration. With the demand for traditional treats soaring during the festive season, the FDA is ramping up inspections across food establishments to prevent the sale of substandard or unsafe products. In addition, the FDA has launched a toll-free helpline number: 1800-222-365 for the public to report any concerns.

“The festive season brings an increase in the demand for traditional food items, and with it, the risk of adulteration. We are conducting thorough inspections to ensure that food businesses comply with safety standards. Strict action will be taken against those found violating the Food Safety and Standards Act,” said Mangesh Mane, Joint Commissioner (Food), Greater Mumbai.

The guidelines issued by the FDA emphasize several important safety practices. These include maintaining a clean and hygienic production environment, using only potable water, and ensuring that raw materials are sourced from licensed suppliers. “Manufacturers must follow stringent hygiene practices. Food workers must undergo medical check-ups, and only food-grade colors should be used,” stressed Mane, highlighting the FDA’s zero-tolerance approach to violations.

In addition to ensuring cleanliness and proper storage practices, the FDA has also cautioned manufacturers about the dangers of reusing frying oil, a habit that can degrade food quality and pose health risks.

“Reusing oil can result in harmful effects on health. We are ensuring that businesses hand over used oil to authorised aggregators,” Mane added.

Consumer Awareness and Safety Measures

Mane urged the public to be vigilant while buying food items, advising, “We request consumers to check for essential details such as the batch number, use-by date, and FSSAI license number on packaging before purchasing. If they come across any suspicious or substandard products, we encourage them to report it immediately.”

To make it easier for consumers to voice their concerns, the FDA has set up a toll-free helpline number: 1800-222-365. “If consumers notice any issues with the quality of sweets or other food items, they can contact the FDA,” Mane emphasized.

The FDA is not only focusing on inspections but is also taking proactive steps to educate food manufacturers. It has been organizing workshops for sweets and mawa manufacturers, offering guidance on best practices to maintain quality and freshness.

Striving for a Safe Festive Season

The FDA’s intensified action on festive foods reflects a commitment to ensuring that the public enjoys a safe and healthy Diwali. By keeping a close eye on food businesses and educating both manufacturers and consumers, the FDA aims to minimize risks associated with food safety during this high-demand season. Public participation, through reporting concerns and choosing reputable products, will play a key role in supporting these efforts.

This comprehensive approach underscores the FDA’s determination to protect consumer health and maintain high standards of food safety during the festive season.
