Environment First: Panvel Municipal Corporation’s New Plan to Boost Green Cover

Date:

Panvel: In a significant step towards environmental conservation, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched an ambitious tree plantation drive as part of the Maharashtra government’s ‘Majhi Vasundhara’ (My Earth) campaign. The initiative aims to mitigate climate change and promote ecological balance through large-scale tree planting across the city.

Following directives from Commissioner Mangesh Chitale, a high-level meeting was held at the PMC headquarters on Wednesday, chaired by Additional Commissioner Ganesh Shete. During the meeting, a Tree Plantation Committee was officially formed to oversee the campaign’s implementation.

Senior officials, including Deputy Commissioners Dr. Vaibhav Vidhate and Swaroop Kharge, Assistant Commissioners Shriram Pawar and Dr. Rupali Mane, Chief Auditor Nilesh Nalawade, and heads of various departments such as Environment, Garden, Water Supply, and Urban Planning were present.

The committee has devised a coordinated action plan involving multiple departments. Specific responsibilities have been assigned: the Urban Planning and Garden Departments will identify suitable locations, the Environment Department will select tree species based on local climate and soil, and the Irrigation Department will handle pit digging. The Garden Department will also be responsible for planting, fencing, and tree maintenance, while the Environment Department will drive public awareness. CSR and Accounts teams will manage funding, and the Water Supply Department will ensure regular irrigation.

The civic body has instructed all departments to begin immediate implementation ahead of the monsoon season. With this proactive approach, PMC aims to expand the city’s green cover and inspire citizens to participate in sustainable urban development.

Officials believe this campaign will be a milestone in Panvel’s journey towards becoming a greener and more environmentally responsible city.
