The Morbe Dam, which supplies water to the city, has a sufficient water reserve. Even if the monsoon is delayed, Navi Mumbai residents do not need to worry about water shortages until August. At present, there is enough water in the dam to meet the demand for 149 days. However, the municipal corporation has urged citizens to use water judiciously.
The city receives a 24-hour water supply from the Morbe Dam, which is owned by the municipal corporation and located in Khalapur Taluka.
Last year, adequate rainfall in the dam’s catchment area led to the reservoir being filled to capacity, preventing severe water shortages this time. In contrast, other parts of the state are already experiencing the effects of water scarcity. Some cities near Navi Mumbai are facing severe water crises.
Inconvenience Due to Low and Inadequate Water Supply
Residents in affected areas are struggling due to low water pressure and inadequate supply. Many are relying on water tankers to meet their needs, and growing frustration among citizens is evident due to the ongoing water crisis.
Water Shortage in MIDC Areas
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) region, within the municipal corporation’s jurisdiction, has large slum settlements that receive water supply through the MIDC. However, for various reasons, residents in these areas do not receive sufficient water. Over the past two to three years, the water shortage issue has worsened, leading residents to demand an adequate supply, especially during the summer months.
Despite sufficient water storage in the dam, citizens should use water cautiously. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has advised against washing housing society premises or vehicles using water hoses. He urged people to avoid wasting potable water and ensure that taps inside their homes are not left running unnecessarily.
