Mumbai: Citizens can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has officially suspended the services of Clean-Up Marshals operating under its Solid Waste Management Department and the ‘Swachh Mumbai Abhiyan’ with effect from April 4, 2025. These marshals were initially appointed to maintain cleanliness and issue fines for violations such as littering in public spaces.
However, over time, several marshals were accused of harassing common citizens, engaging in verbal altercations, and in some cases, even extorting money. There have also been reports of tourists being targeted and mistreated by these personnel, drawing sharp criticism from citizens and civic groups alike.
Despite the suspension of their services, the BMC continues to receive complaints about marshals illegally collecting fines. Taking serious note of these incidents, the civic body has appealed to residents not to pay any fines and to report such cases immediately.
“To ensure transparency and protect citizens from unauthorized actions, we urge the public to remain vigilant. If anyone is approached or fined by individuals claiming to be Clean-Up Marshals after April 4, they must contact the BMC’s divisional control room,” a BMC spokesperson stated.
The BMC has activated dedicated helplines for complaints and assistance. Citizens can report such incidents by calling 022-23855128 or 022-23877691 (Ext: 549/500).
This move comes in response to increasing public outrage over the misuse of power by marshals and growing complaints of arbitrary and unjustified fine collection in recent months.
