NAVI MUMBAI: With several CIDCO nodes in Navi Mumbai facing a water shortage, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has started tracking every tanker it runs to stop misuse and irregularities in water distribution.

All 34 tankers supplying water in CIDCO areas have been fitted with GPS, and CCTV cameras now monitor the 11 main tanker filling stations, according to a report in Navarashtra. The GPS lets officials see each tanker’s route, location and delivery points. Records of how much water is distributed every day are also being checked.

The measures are part of regular reviews held under CIDCO vice-chairman and managing director Ashwin Mudgal. High-level meetings are being held to tackle the shortage in different nodes, and departments have been given instructions. The main aim is to make tanker supply transparent and keep watch on every tanker’s movement.

No tanker water for construction

CIDCO has also stopped supplying tanker water to developers for construction and development work, so that drinking water needs get priority. If a housing society is found using tanker water to fill a swimming pool, its tanker supply will be stopped immediately.

Penal action if misuse is proved

CIDCO’s vigilance department is examining complaints received earlier about water supply. The administration has warned that if irregularities or misuse are proved, those responsible will face penalties and strict legal action.

CIDCO has appealed to residents and housing societies to use water carefully and cooperate with the administration.
