New Delhi : The CBI on receiving a complaint from Health Ministry has registered an FIR to probe the registration by Medical Councils across the country of Foreign Medical Graduates that have been registered without qualifying the mandatory Foreign medical graduate exam (FMGE). As many as 73 such candidates who have studied medicine abroad, which include Russia, Ukraine and China between 2011 and 2022 are under the scanner of CBI. An FIR under sections of prevention of corruption act apart from IPC sections pertaining to criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery has been registered. As per existing regulations, any student who pursued medicine from an institution abroad must qualify a screening test called the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) to get a provisional or permanent registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or State Medical Councils (SMCs) and practice medicine in India .
Earlier, the National Board of Examination (NBE) had intimated the Ministry of Health that 73 such medical graduates who did their MBBS from foreign countries such as Russia, Ukraine, China, and Nigeria during 2011-22 have not qualified its examination and yet got registration from various state medical councils.
