This bridge is a South Asia’s first cable-stayed bridge with a 100-metre horizontal curve.
Mumbai: The construction of the cable-stayed bridge on the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension, being developed by the MMRDA, has been completed. The bridge was initially scheduled to open for traffic before the monsoon, but it will now be inaugurated on August 14.
Technically, this bridge holds a special distinction — it is South Asia’s first cable-stayed bridge with a 100-metre horizontal curve. The structure is 215 metres long, with an orthotropic steel deck and a height of 25 metres from the ground, passing over the Western Express Highway. Its width ranges from 10.5 to 17.2 metres, accommodating two lanes. The Y-shaped pylon design has been specially crafted to ensure the safety of Metro Line 3 and underground utility services.
Once operational, the bridge will enable signal-free travel from Kurla directly to Panbai School and the airport. It will also provide seamless connectivity between the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway, easing traffic on Vakola, BKC, and LBS Road. The project is expected to reduce travel time, save fuel, and boost east–west connectivity in the city.
