An advanced ventilation system is being installed in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus subway to remove hot and polluted air. This system will help to enhance ventilation and also lower the temperature, creating a more comfortable environment for commuters.
This system includes nine jet fans and high-capacity central fans to aid air circulation in the underground passage. Additionally, two high-capacity fans are also being installed centrally to expel air from the passage. The system is designed similarly to those used in tunnels to ensure air circulation throughout the area.
According to a BMC, the new ventilation system will help to lower the temperature and maintain clean air in the tube. This will lessen the discomfort brought on by crowded subways. Additionally, it will aid in the subway’s hot air removal. Passengers and pedestrians use the subway more after arriving at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Although there is now a system in place to evacuate hot air, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has ordered the installation of a high-quality ventilation system from Maharashtra due to the growing usage of the tunnel.
The subway has drawn criticism for unsanitary conditions, limited ventilation, bad lighting, and crowding ever since it opened in 1999. Illegal hawking and unapproved store additions have also made it more difficult for pedestrians to move around. Air conditioners were installed in some of the subway’s stores to cool their tiny spaces, however this increased the heat load inside the underground. BMC claims that there are 51 stores in the CST subway.
