Mumbai: A viral video showing uneven patches on the Dharmaveer, Swarajyarakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road (South) Project has sparked public concern, but the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has dismissed fears of construction defects. The civic body has assured that the road is structurally sound, with no cracks or potholes, and that the patches seen in the footage are part of a planned preventive measure.
The video, recorded from a moving vehicle and shared by social media user Eternal Drift on platform X, fueled speculation about poor construction quality. However, the BMC clarified that the patches are mastic layers applied to protect the asphalt from monsoon damage and are not signs of deterioration. Officials confirmed that the road’s appearance will be restored within 15 to 20 days.
The northbound section (Chowpatty to Worli), which opened in July 2024, received this additional treatment to strengthen expansion joints and extend road longevity. In contrast, the southbound section (Worli to Chowpatty), opened in March 2024, had adequate time to settle before the monsoon and did not require such measures.
Urging the public to avoid misinformation and rumors, the BMC emphasized that the Mumbai Coastal Road is a landmark infrastructure project, built to the highest safety and engineering standards.
