BMC Accused of Favoring Monopoly in Expensive Fire Ladder Purchase

Date:

Mumbai: The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) is under the scanner over a proposed ₹40 crore purchase of 68-meter ladders—just four meters taller than its existing 64-meter versions. BJP spokesperson and former corporator Bhalchandra Shirsat has raised red flags over what he calls a “blatant misuse of public funds” and has demanded a full-fledged inquiry.

In a letter addressed to BMC Additional Commissioner Dr. Amit Saini, Shirsat alleged that the tender process lacks transparency and violates the Central Vigilance Commission’s procurement guidelines. He claims the contract favors a single German manufacturer, Magirus GmbH, which enjoys a global monopoly on 68-meter ladders, leaving no room for competitive bidding.

“In previous tenders, the BMC encouraged competition by allowing bids for 64-meter ladders, which helped bring the cost down to ₹10 crore per unit. Now, the same civic body is ready to pay ₹20 crore per ladder, simply for a minor increase in height,” Shirsat said.

According to officials, the Fire Brigade already possesses turntable ladders of 64 meters and hydraulic platforms that can reach up to 90 meters during emergencies. Despite this, four new 68-meter ladders are being procured, raising questions over necessity and financial prudence.

“This is not just a technical decision—it’s a financial one that impacts taxpayers. With ₹40 crore on the line, the public deserves answers,” Shirsat stated, urging the civic administration to halt the process and initiate an internal probe.

With the opposition turning up the heat and watchdogs taking note, the BMC now faces increasing pressure to justify the procurement or roll it back altogether.
