Bombay Hospital has announced that trans voice surgery will now be available at an affordable cost. The hospital has introduced a complete surgery package for just ₹20,000, significantly reducing the usual expenses associated with the procedure.
Dr. Nupur Nerurkar, a laryngeal specialist and voice surgeon at Bombay Hospital, explained that for transgender individuals transitioning from male to female, voice often becomes a challenge due to hormonal changes. While many rely on voice modulation, it can lead to vocal fatigue and mental stress.
In a significant milestone, two trans women—a 30-year-old graphic designer and a 25-year-old makeup artist—became the first beneficiaries of this initiative, successfully undergoing voice feminization surgery this week. The surgeries were conducted under the hospital’s new subsidized package, aimed at helping transgender individuals achieve a voice that aligns with their gender identity.
Success with Modern Technology
Voice surgery provides trans women with a permanently feminine voice. Dr. Nupur has performed over 60 trans voice surgeries so far, with two successful procedures conducted in January. She emphasized that with modern techniques, the surgery can be performed smoothly and effectively without major incisions.
