Matheran attracts tourist from globe who often have to bear high lodging costs. Now these tourists can enjoy cooler climate and affordable accommodations with Central Railway’s new pod hotels at Matheran. These pod hotels will be costing between 800 to 1000 rupees. These budget-friendly pod hotels can become alternative to the expensive private hotels, which typically charge around 2000 rupees per night. The initiative is expected to be launched post-monsoon.

Originating from Japan, pod hotels are designed to offer compact, affordable lodging without compromising on essential facilities. The new pod hotel in Matheran will provide a comfortable and cost-effective stay for tourists from all parts of the state and beyond.

Previously, Central Railway had successfully launched a pod hotel at CSMT station which is still receiving positive feedback from travellers. Building on this success, they issued an online tender in September 2023 to establish a pod hotel in Matheran. The winning bid was 8,19,000 rupees per annum, with a 10-year agreement including a 10% annual license fee increase after the first three years. The pod hotel will cover a total area of 758.77 square meters and accommodate singles, doubles, and families.

Although exact rental prices are yet to be finalized, the Central Railway assures that these pod hotels will be cheaper than private hotels. The pod hotels will operate on a build, operate, and transfer basis, equipped with all modern amenities. The licensee will bear the entire cost of development and operation, including construction, security, maintenance, and utilities.
