The southwest monsoon is expected to hit the Kerala coast by May 27, 2025, arriving four days earlier than its usual onset date—a first since 2008. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the monsoon has already advanced into parts of the Nicobar Islands, the southern Andaman Sea, and the eastern Bay of Bengal.
The monsoon winds typically pass through the Maldives, eastern Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands, and central Andaman Sea. IMD predicts that by May 15 or 16, the monsoon will rapidly progress further. It will then enter the southern Arabian Sea and cover parts of Sri Lanka, more of the southern Bay of Bengal, and the entire Andaman Islands.
Over the next two days, many states are likely to experience rainfall. In Maharashtra, thunderstorms and rainfall are expected until May 14. Rain is also forecast in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Sikkim.
