The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation supplies water to residents from the Ulhas River. However, the river has become increasingly polluted due to sewage discharge and waterlogging. Taking action, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has initiated efforts to tackle the issue using specialized machinery. Sub-projects have also been launched to prevent the release of sewage into the river.
As part of the initiative, the MPCB has collected water samples from 70 different points along the river to assess the water quality. According to Jayant Kadam, Deputy Regional Officer of the MPCB, the samples have been sent to the board’s laboratory for analysis. The results, expected in two weeks, will determine whether the river water is polluted or suitable for drinking.
The Ulhas River is said to be heavily polluted from Badlapur to Kalyan. ‘Mi Kalyankar’, an organization working to save the river, has also demanded an official check on the river’s water quality.
The Pollution Control Board has begun removing aquatic plants from the river as part of the cleanup operation. Of the 70 samples collected, 17 were taken by the Kalyan Pollution Control Board, while the remaining were gathered by the regional office. All samples have been sent to the lab for thorough testing.
