Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is accelerating its ongoing concrete road projects, aiming to complete all works—including final touches like road markings, signage, and safety installations—by May 31, 2025. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar has directed officials to ensure that roads ready for traffic are completed with thermoplastic markings, reflective studs, directional signs, junction grids, and beautification measures.
During a night inspection on April 29, Bangar visited key roadworks in Ghatkopar (East and West) and Kurla (East), including the Shrimad Rajchandra Gyanmandir Marg, Vidyabhavan Marg, Shivsrushti Marg, and Sanghani Estate Road. He reviewed the status of completed and ongoing work, stressing the need for quality control and timely execution.
One of the key highlights of the visit was the emphasis on using silicone sealant instead of traditional bitumen for expansion joints in concrete roads. “Silicone sealants are more flexible and resistant to temperature fluctuations. Their use will help prevent cracks in concrete slabs and increase road longevity,” said Bangar.
Shivsrushti Marg in Kurla (East)—a 210-meter-long and 14-meter-wide road—is now fully operational with upgraded footpaths, stormwater drains, utility ducts, and traffic safety features. The completed work is not only improving traffic flow but also enhancing the locality’s visual appeal.
Meanwhile, Sanghani Estate Road in Ghatkopar (West) is being constructed using the Thin White Topping (TWT) method, which involves laying a concrete layer over an existing asphalt surface. This technique, which uses M60-grade concrete, is faster, more durable, and cost-effective compared to traditional concreting methods. Bangar recommended adopting the Ultra-Thin White Topping (UTWT) approach wherever possible to speed up work and reduce costs.
Officials from IIT Bombay, including Assistant Professor Solomon Debbarma and BMC’s Deputy Chief Engineer Sanjay Sonawane, along with quality control teams, were present during the inspection.
BMC has set fixed deadlines for each road under the project, ensuring that both structural work and final safety enhancements are completed by the May 31 deadline.
