Mumbai–Goa Ro-Ro Service in the Works, Journey to Take Just 6 Hours

Date:

While there is still no clear timeline for the completion of the Mumbai-Goa highway, efforts to connect the two regions via water transport have gained momentum. Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has announced that plans are underway to launch a Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) ferry service between Mumbai and Goa, significantly reducing travel time to just 6 hours.

Recently, a central minister had also announced initiatives to boost water transport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which is geographically ideal due to the presence of both creeks and the sea. Construction of 15 to 20 jetties in the region has already been completed. A Ro-Ro service has already been launched from Mira-Bhayander to Vasai-Virar, setting the stage for broader water-based connectivity.

Currently, the Mumbai-Goa highway project is still incomplete, and poor road conditions make travel along this route extremely challenging for drivers and passengers alike. Train tickets are often fully booked, and airfare remains high. In such circumstances, a water transport route between Mumbai and Goa could offer major relief to regular commuters and travelers.

At present, a Ro-Ro service between Mumbai and Alibaug is already operational, allowing both passengers and vehicles to travel conveniently. This has proven beneficial to commuters in the region. A similar service on the Mumbai–Goa route could not only benefit residents of Mumbai but also provide a boost to Goa’s tourism sector.

Moreover, the proposed Ro-Ro service would be crucial for the Konkan region. If the ferry halts at key points like Alibaug, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, it could significantly improve connectivity for travelers heading to the Konkan coast.
