Panvel Faces Water Cut As Stocks In Dehrang Dam Depleted

Date:

As summer sets in, residents of Panvel are facing water rationing, with the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) enforcing weekly one-day supply cuts due to declining water levels. The decision comes as a preventive measure to ensure adequate supply until the arrival of the monsoon, expected by mid-June.

According to an official from PMC’s Water Supply Department, the ongoing water cut is necessary to sustain supply levels until June 15.

PMC sources its water from the Dehrang Dam, as well as Maharashtra Jal Pradhikaran (MJP) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). However, increased withdrawals have led to a significant drop in Dehrang Dam’s water levels, prompting the civic body to introduce area-wise water cuts, with different zones experiencing a one-day supply disruption each week.

Vilas Chavan, Deputy Engineer at PMC’s Water Supply Department, noted that water supply from the Patalganga River reduces on Sundays and Mondays. Frequent power shutdowns and technical breakdowns also disrupt supply from MJP and MIDC. To compensate, PMC has been relying more heavily on Dehrang Dam, further depleting reserves.

PMC requires approximately 30 million liters per day (MLD) to meet demand, drawing 16 MLD from Dehrang Dam while the remaining supply comes from MIDC and MJP.

Residents are urged to plan water usage accordingly and cooperate with the civic body during this period of rationing.

  • Saturday: Areas under the Gangaram Theatre ESR
  • Monday: Market Yard and Chaukani WTP areas
