Matheran, a popular hill station known for its scenic beauty, has been shut down indefinitely from Tuesday in protest against the increasing cases of tourist scams and looting. The call for the shutdown was given by the Matheran Tourism Protection Struggle Committee, and it has received an overwhelming response from the locals.
The hill station attracts millions of visitors every year who come to enjoy its natural beauty. However, in recent months, there have been increasing reports of tourists being cheated and forced to pay illegal charges by groups of horsemen, porters, and agents. Many visitors have shared their unpleasant experiences on social media, raising concerns about the declining reputation of Matheran as a safe travel destination. The Matheran Tourism Protection Struggle Committee has urged the local administration to intervene and take necessary action. However, after no response from the authorities, the committee decided to call for an indefinite shutdown from 18 March.
Several organizations, including the Matheran Traders Association, Hotel Association, political parties, e-rickshaw unions, and social organizations, have supported the shutdown. As a result, Matheran’s markets, hotels, hand-pulled rickshaws, and e-rickshaws remained completely closed on Tuesday. The usually busy tourist spot appeared deserted, with no visitors in sight. Additionally, security measures were tightened, and an increased police presence was observed across the town.
To find a resolution, a meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, chaired by MLA Mahendra Thorve. The meeting will be attended by the Karjat Sub-Divisional Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and representatives from various political and social organizations, as well as the Hotel Association.
