The arrival of Hapus mangoes has increased in the APMC market in Vashi, leading to a drop in prices. Due to the temperature rise, mangoes are being harvested earlier, resulting in 6,000 crates of Hapus arriving in the market on Tuesday. However, since they are being harvested prematurely, most of the mangoes are smaller in size.
The price of Hapus has fallen by ₹500 to ₹1,000 per crate. Previously, crates containing 4 to 6 dozen mangoes were sold at ₹3,500 to ₹7,000, but now they are being sold at ₹3,000 to ₹6,000. While there were expectations of a good harvest this year, unpredictable weather conditions have affected production.
Over the past few days, the temperature has risen significantly. The intense heat is impacting Hapus mangoes, and orchard owners in Konkan are now focusing on early harvesting. The scorching sun is affecting the quality of the mangoes, causing many to fall prematurely. As a result, farmers are prioritizing harvesting to minimize losses.
“Since March, the supply of Hapus mangoes from Konkan, as well as mangoes from Karnataka and Raigad, has increased. However, due to extreme heat, Hapus growers have started harvesting before the mangoes fully mature. Currently, 80% of the mangoes arriving in the market are small, while only 20% are larger in size,” said Sanjay Pimple, a trader.
