A fire broke out in a parking lot near CIDCO Bhawan in Belapur, partially damaging two vehicles before firefighters from the Belapur Fire Station brought it under control. The incident has sparked fresh concerns over the safety of parking areas in the city.
According to fire officials, the blaze started in dry grass and quickly spread, endangering vehicles parked nearby. While the exact cause remains unknown, authorities suspect a discarded cigarette butt may have ignited the fire.
The parking lot, situated beneath high-tension power lines and adjacent to the Sion-Panvel Highway, has been a point of contention among activists. Sudhir Dani, founder of the Alert Citizen Forum, reiterated safety concerns, stating, “The facility violates Maharashtra State Electricity Regulatory Commission rules, which prohibit human activity beneath high-voltage transmission lines.”
Residents and activists are urging authorities to reassess the safety of such parking spaces to prevent similar incidents in the future.
