Following the Indian Air Force (IAF) marked a significant moment at the new Navi Mumbai International Airport with an Airbus C295 landing on the airport’s Southern Runway (RY08/26) symbolizing the airport’s operational readiness, Yesterday Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that the Navi Mumbai International Airport will be named after DB Patil, a former Member of Parliament and activist.
During the test flight event, Shinde praised the government’s efficient project management and swift implementation of infrastructure projects like the Ladli Behan Yojana and the new airport.
DB Patil was a significant figure in Maharashtra’s political landscape, especially as a champion for farmers’ rights. Born in 1926 in Raigad district, Patil began his political career after earning his LLB and served five terms in the Maharashtra Assembly from Panvel later representing Kolaba as an MP. Known for his work with the Peasants and Workers Party, Patil advocated strongly for farmers and landowners and led numerous protests during the 1970s and 1980s especially against land acquisition projects in Panvel by CIDCO.
The C295, manufactured by Airbus, meets the IAF’s transport needs and will soon see 40 additional units manufactured domestically by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in Vadodara. Additionally, an IAF Sukhoi SU-30MKI performed a low flypast over the airport, underscoring the strategic value of the airport’s infrastructure.
The new airport, named in his honor is expected to alleviate congestion at Mumbai’s primary airport, offering a modernized alternative and contributing to regional connectivity and economic growth.
