A total of 4,140 candidates will compete in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections as 2,938 candidates withdrew their nominations by the deadline on Monday.
Of the 288 Assembly seats, Majalgaon in Beed district has the most candidates with 34 in the race. Mahad in Raigad and Kudal in Sindhudurg have the fewest with five candidates each.
Comparing with past elections, 3,237 candidates contested in 2019 while 4,119 took part in 2014.
In Nanded’s Bhokar constituency, 25 candidates remain after 115 of 140 candidates withdrew. Among them is Shreejaya Chavan, daughter of former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan who is making her debut as a BJP candidate and will compete against Congress’s Tirupati Kadam-Kondhekar.
In Mumbai and its suburbs 420 candidates are in the race across 36 constituencies. Mumbai suburbs have 315 candidates across 26 seats while Mumbai city has 105 candidates across 10 seats.
