Iron reinforcement cage toppled onto a car with a shattered windshield on Kopri Bridge, Thane

THANE: A reinforcement cage of an under-construction pier toppled onto a moving car on Kopri Bridge in Thane on Saturday, damaging the vehicle’s front windshield. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

The pier is part of the Anand Nagar–Saket Elevated Road project of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The incident took place on the Thane-to-Mumbai route of the busy road, where work on the nearly 3-km-long corridor is under way.

Videos from the spot show the tilted bundle of iron rods resting on the car, with its bonnet dented and windshield shattered. Workers were seen climbing the toppled cage after the incident.

Car removed, cage being cleared

The damaged vehicle has been removed, and the toppled reinforcement cage is being safely cleared with the assistance of a crane.

₹2 crore penalty on contractor

The MMRDA has imposed a penalty of ₹2 crore on the contractor executing the project for the incident. A detailed investigation has already been ordered to ascertain the cause and identify any safety lapses.
