Rising Lightning Fatalities During Monsoon

Monsoon season sees a sharp rise in lightning-related deaths. In response, the state government has initiated the implementation of modern lightning protection systems and early warning mechanisms. A proposal has also been submitted to higher authorities to install such systems in more areas if the current initiative proves successful.

What Is the Lightning Protection System?

A lightning protection system is a safety mechanism designed to shield buildings and structures from lightning strikes. It usually involves a specific metal structure that attracts lightning and safely channels the electric charge into the ground. This greatly reduces the risk to buildings and the people in and around them.

Where Are These Systems Installed?

So far, the systems have been installed in 10 villages across Thane district, including Nyahali Tulai in Murbad and several areas in Navi Mumbai like Belapur, Nerul, Vashi, Turbhe, Koparkhairane, Ghansoli, Airoli, and Diva. A proposal has been submitted to install lightning protection systems at 48 more locations, including 4 in Thane, 4 in Kalyan, 9 in Bhiwandi, 7 each in Ambernath and Ulhasnagar, 3 in Murbad, 10 in Shahapur, and 3 in Upper Mira-Bhayandar.
