In a significant move to boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption, the Maharashtra government has announced a new Electric Vehicle Policy 2025. As part of this initiative, the government has issued an order granting complete toll exemption for passenger electric vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Samruddhi Mahamarg, and the Shivdi-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu. The order was officially released on Friday.
The state cabinet had approved the new EV policy on April 29, but its implementation was delayed due to the absence of a formal government resolution. The toll exemption is now active, following the issuance of the order 24 days after the policy approval.
Incentives for Electric Vehicles
Under the new policy, the maximum financial incentives per vehicle are as follows:
- Two-wheelers: ₹10,000
- Three-wheelers: ₹30,000
- Three-wheeler goods vehicles: ₹30,000
- Four-wheelers (non-transport): ₹1.5 lakh
- Four-wheelers (transport): ₹2 lakh
- Light commercial four-wheelers: ₹1 lakh
- Buses (M3, M4 category under State Transport Undertakings – STUs): ₹20 lakh
- Buses (M3, M4 under private/state/urban transport undertakings): ₹20 lakh
Status of Toll Exemption on State Roads
Earlier, it was stated that EVs would get 50% toll exemption on other state roads under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department. However, the latest order clarifies that toll exemption on these roads will be decided by a steering committee chaired by the Chief Secretary.
EV Charging Infrastructure Plans
To support the EV ecosystem, the government also plans to set up EV charging stations at intervals of 25 km on both state and national highways. Additionally, all existing and upcoming petrol pumps will be required to have at least one EV charging facility. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and the transport department for this purpose.
Fast-charging infrastructure will also be made mandatory at all ST bus depots and stations. This comprehensive policy aims to encourage sustainable transport models along major routes such as Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Nagpur.
