New Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in an interview with Aaj Tak, clarified that passengers will not be charged extra for carrying additional luggage in trains. Earlier, reports had claimed that, similar to airlines, passengers would have to pay extra charges for excess baggage during train journeys. The news had sparked criticism from several political parties.

The minister clearly stated that no new rule regarding passengers’ luggage weight has been implemented. He emphasized that the existing rules governing how much luggage passengers can carry remain unchanged, and there has been no modification.
Earlier reports had claimed that while these rules were already in place, the Railways planned to enforce them more strictly. As per those rules, different travel classes allow varying luggage limits without extra charges—for example:
- First Class AC passengers: up to 70 kg
- AC 2nd Class: up to 50 kg
- AC 3rd Class and Sleeper Class: up to 40 kg
- General Class: up to 35 kg
Some reports even suggested that stations would introduce electronic luggage weighing machines, and passengers would have to pre-book excess baggage like at airports. It was also claimed that bags exceeding the weight or size limit could invite fines, with only 10 kg of additional allowance without pre-booking.
Dismissing these reports, Minister Vaishnaw assured passengers that there will be no such penalties or strict baggage checks at railway stations.
