Navi Mumbai: In a significant step toward curbing drug-related crimes, the Navi Mumbai Police destroyed narcotics worth ₹10 crore today. The seized contraband, linked to 40 criminal cases, was disposed of at the government-approved Mumbai Waste Management Company in Taloja, Panvel. Maharashtra’s Forest Minister, Hon. Shri Ganesh Naik, and Panvel MLA, Hon. Shri Prashant Thakur, were present at the event.
This operation is part of the ‘Drug-Free Navi Mumbai’ initiative, a campaign launched on January 8, 2025, under the leadership of Police Commissioner Shri Milind Bharambe. The initiative aims to curb drug trafficking, create awareness, and make the city safer. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Hon. Shri Devendra Fadnavis attended the campaign’s launch, and Bollywood actor John Abraham has been appointed as its brand ambassador.
The police’s relentless efforts against drug abuse have led to major breakthroughs. Between 2023 and 2024, 1,143 drug-related cases were registered, resulting in the arrest of 1,743 individuals. Drugs worth ₹56 crore were seized, including ₹38 crore worth of narcotics confiscated from 111 African nationals. In addition, 1,131 African and 224 Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in Navi Mumbai faced action, with 1,128 of them deported.
As part of the campaign, extensive awareness drives are being conducted in schools, colleges, housing societies, and railway station premises. A dedicated helpline (8828-112-112) has been launched to assist citizens, and banners and hoardings have been placed across the city to reinforce the anti-drug message.
The Mumbai Waste Management Company, authorized for the disposal of confiscated materials, carried out today’s destruction of narcotics, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance approach toward drugs.
With a strong stance on tackling the drug menace, the Navi Mumbai Police remain committed to keeping the city safe and drug-free.
