Mumbai’s First Mangrove Park to Open in July at Gorai

Date:

The much-awaited Gorai Mangrove Conservation Centre and Park, located in Gorai village in Borivali, North Mumbai, is set to open to the public in July. Spread across 8 hectares (approximately 19.76 acres), the eco-tourism project has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹33.43 crore by the Maharashtra government.

The park will feature a Nature Interpretation Centre (NIC), an 800-meter-long mangrove trail, a birdwatching observatory, and various eco-tourism attractions. The mangrove trail will allow visitors to walk through lush mangrove forests, providing a closer look at Mumbai’s rich coastal biodiversity. Although the park was originally scheduled to open in May and later postponed to June, the final finishing touches are now underway.

Surrounded by Over 50 km of Mangrove Forests

According to the Maharashtra Forest Department, work on the project is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed within this month. Once finished, the park will open its gates to the public in July. Nature enthusiasts across the city have been eagerly awaiting this unique addition to Mumbai’s green spaces.

Visitors will be able to enjoy scenic views from the watchtower built near Gorai Creek and walk along a 740-meter-long elevated boardwalk meandering through dense mangrove forests. This boardwalk, thoughtfully designed without cutting a single tree, offers a serene and educational experience in nature.

Mumbai’s First Mangrove Park

This will be Mumbai’s first dedicated mangrove park, aimed not only at promoting tourism but also spreading awareness about marine ecosystems and the importance of conservation. With over 50 kilometers of Mumbai’s coastal area surrounded by mangroves, the park will play a crucial role in educating the public on the significance of preserving aquatic biodiversity.

Key Highlights:

  • Developed by the Maharashtra Forest Department’s Mangrove Foundation
  • Features a 740-meter boardwalk designed around the natural landscape without cutting any trees
  • Includes a 1,517 sq. meter Nature Interpretation Centre, adjacent to a former dumping ground
  • The project faced delays and was initially expected to be completed by January 2023

With its official opening now on the horizon, the Gorai Mangrove Park is poised to become a landmark destination for eco-tourism and environmental education in Mumbai.
