The long-awaited expansion of the 466 km Mumbai-Goa Highway in Maharashtra is finally nearing completion, with authorities aiming to finish the project by May-June 2025, as per a recent report. This significant infrastructure upgrade will provide travelers with a faster and smoother journey, reducing travel time between Mumbai and Goa from 12 hours to just 6 hours.
Despite its potential to boost connectivity and economic development, the project has encountered multiple delays, leading to a rise in costs from the initial estimate of Rs 3,500 crore to Rs 7,300 crore. Currently, work is ongoing for key bypasses, underpasses, and flyovers in towns like Mangaon, Indapur, Pali, Lanja, Kolad, and Chiplun. However, officials have assured that major sections of the road will be completed before the monsoon season.
The 84 km stretch from Panvel to Indapur is being developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), while the remaining portions are under the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Once completed, the highway will not only improve connectivity between Mumbai and Goa but also play a crucial role in facilitating trade, tourism, and local businesses along the western coast.
With the project nearing its final stages, the upgraded Mumbai-Goa Highway is set to transform travel and economic activity in the region.
