Maharashtra Elections 2024: Housing, Safety, and Development Take Center Stage in Dahisar

Date:

As Maharashtra’s assembly elections approach, the Dahisar constituency in Mumbai North is gearing up for a fierce contest between BJP’s incumbent MLA Manisha Chaudhary and Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Vinod Ghosalkar.

The election scheduled for November 20 with results on November 23. It highlights critical local issues including stalled redevelopment, inadequate housing, safety concerns and rising unemployment. Dahisar’s diverse demographic includes a blend of Maharashtrian, Gujarati, Marwadi, North Indian, Muslim and Christian communities with housing and redevelopment as deeply emotive issues for many.

Ghosalkar, a former MLA challenges Chaudhary’s two-term record and highlights the challenges faced by Dahisar’s residents particularly the unfinished redevelopment projects.

“Housing is a deeply emotional issue affecting thousands,” Ghosalkar noted by stressing the stalled SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) projects and numerous private societies left in limbo due to builder delays and lack of oversight.

Ghosalkar proposed an independent agency to hold developers accountable ensuring timely project completion and improved living standards.

Safety is another pressing concern for Ghosalkar, whose family experienced a tragic loss when his son was killed in a public shooting earlier this year. The incident intensified his focus on public safety and he pledges to tackle “hooliganism and terrorism,” emphasizing a need for stronger policies and accountability across law enforcement and municipal authorities. “If my family isn’t safe, no one is,” he said underscoring his personal commitment to protecting constituents.

On the other hand, Chaudhary remains confident in her development record citing initiatives such as improved transportation, toll removal and increased connectivity with the Metro expansion in Dahisar. She also promises to continue focusing on development projects that meet resident’s daily needs from schools to commercial spaces.

The Dahisar election will be a test of leadership and accountability as voters weigh both candidates’ pledges to address housing, safety and the needs of this vibrant constituency.
