Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert forecasting a sharp increase in rainfall activity across several parts of Maharashtra from May 20 to 25, 2025. The alert follows the expected formation of a low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea, which may intensify and move northward in the coming days.
According to the IMD, an upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to form off the Karnataka coast around May 21. A day later, it is expected to evolve into a low-pressure system, potentially bringing widespread rainfall to the Konkan region and adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra. The system is also likely to enhance thunderstorm activity over other parts of the state.
Rainfall Forecast and Thunderstorm Alert
Between May 20 and May 25, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is predicted over Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra, with heavy to very heavy showers expected at isolated locations. In Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall is expected during May 20–23. This may be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph.
Monsoon Onset Imminent
Meteorological conditions are becoming favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala within the next 4–5 days. The IMD also anticipates the monsoon to advance further over the South Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, parts of the Bay of Bengal, and northeastern India during this period.
Fishermen and Coastal Warnings Issued
In view of the expected weather conditions, the IMD has issued specific warnings for fishermen and coastal operations:
North Maharashtra Coast (up to 75 km from shore): Squally winds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are likely on May 21 and May 24. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during these days.
South Maharashtra–Goa Coast: Similar conditions are expected between May 20 and May 24.
Additionally, squally weather with wind speeds of 45–55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, is very likely along and off the South Maharashtra–Goa coast. The IMD has directed the hoisting of Local Cautionary Signal Number III (LC-III) at all ports from Bankot to Marmugao.
Precautionary Measures Urged
Authorities have advised fishermen, port officials, and residents in coastal areas to remain alert and follow official advisories. The public is urged to monitor updates from the IMD and local disaster management authorities.
