How Kasardi River in Panvel to Be Restored, Know Here

Date:

Panvel: In a major step toward restoring the polluted Kasardi River, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) conducted an on-site inspection under the Kasardi River Rejuvenation Project on May 14, 2025. This initiative aims to protect and rejuvenate the river, which connects the Taloja industrial zone with nearby villages.

The inspection was led by Additional Municipal Commissioner Ganesh Shete, accompanied by Dr. Vikrant Bhalerao from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Deputy Engineer Amit Parle from the Water Resources Department, and key officials from PWD, MIDC, and other civic departments.

Following directives from the Raigad District Collector, PMC has adopted a proactive approach to urgently conserve the Kasardi River. The inspection’s goal was to assess ground-level conditions and lay the foundation for a comprehensive action plan.

During the visit, it was observed that untreated chemical water and sewage were being illegally discharged into the river at Ganesh Ghat in Tondare by private companies using tankers. MPCB has been instructed to take immediate action against the violators.

Additional Commissioner Shete issued several key directives, including:

  • Installation of solar-powered CCTV cameras at key river locations to monitor illegal discharges.
  • Planning of a small chain of check dams at Ganesh Ghat to aid in river flow management.
  • Construction of a gabion wall at Kaprecharya Mandir in Navade to prevent tidal water intrusion during high tide.
  • Removal of physical obstructions in the riverbed to ensure natural water flow, especially during summer.
  • Transfer of chemically contaminated water from the river to the CETP (Common Effluent Treatment Plant) for treatment.
  • Strict monitoring and regulation of tankers parked along roads in the MIDC area.

The Water Resources Department was also notified to take action against unauthorized construction in the riverbed, and MIDC representatives were asked to coordinate enforcement efforts.

The meeting concluded with detailed discussions on various environmental concerns. Additional Commissioner Shete emphasized the need for all stakeholders to take prompt action within a fixed timeframe to ensure the effective implementation of conservation measures.

Environmental Department Head Manoj Chavan, TIA’s Satish Shetty, Sunil Padlani, Zonal Officer Jitendra Madhavi, and Assistant Engineers Audumbar Alat, H.N. Sarg, and Nivrutti Chantewad were among the officials present.

The Kasardi River Rejuvenation Project is expected to play a critical role in improving ecological balance and enhancing the quality of life for residents in and around Panvel.
