Maintaining good dental health is crucial, as its benefits go beyond just oral hygiene. Healthy teeth and gums play a vital role in overall well-being, impacting medical expenses and quality of life. However, in Mumbai, high dental treatment costs deter many residents from seeking necessary care.

Private dentists charge exorbitant fees, making treatment unaffordable for many. Every second Mumbaikar believes dental care should be more affordable, with growing calls for the state government to regulate treatment charges.

This issue came to light in an online survey conducted by LocalCircles on the occasion of World Oral Health Day. The survey gathered opinions from 6,590 people in Mumbai to understand their concerns regarding dental services. According to Sachin Taparia, the founder of LocalCircles, 46,000 participants from 369 districts across the country took part in the survey, with 64% being men and 36% women.

Huge Disparity in Treatment Costs

Taparia highlighted that the survey revealed significant differences in the cost of various dental treatments across the country. To ensure uniformity, the government needs to take necessary steps. If dental treatments become more affordable, more people will be able to avail them.

Varying Charges for Dental Fillings

The survey found a substantial variation in the cost of dental fillings. About 28% of respondents reported that they were charged more than ₹3,000 for a single filling, while 39% stated they paid between ₹2,000 to ₹3,000. Additionally, 4% of people mentioned that their dentists charged them ₹800 to ₹1,000 per tooth for fillings.

Root Canal Fees Lack Uniformity

A staggering 40% of Mumbai respondents reported paying over ₹10,000 for a single root canal treatment. Another 38% said they were charged between ₹8,000 to ₹10,000, while 15% paid ₹5,000 to ₹8,000. About 6% mentioned they paid ₹3,000 to ₹5,000, and only 2% received treatment for ₹2,000 to ₹3,000.

Taparia emphasized that due to high costs, people hesitate to seek treatment and visit dentists only when extraction becomes unavoidable. He stated that the survey report would be submitted to the central government.

Previously, LocalCircles conducted a survey on the cost of angioplasty stents, which led to government intervention and price regulation. Similarly, they hope this report will prompt the authorities to standardize dental treatment fees.
