Navi Mumbai, 26 June 2025 — In a heart-wrenching yet inspiring incident, SEAL Ashram has once again proven its unwavering commitment to humanity. It rescued a 53-year-old mentally ill man, Anup Kumar Nair, who had been living in appalling conditions in his Nerul apartment—alone, neglected, and unseen—for over three years.
The intervention followed a distress call from Mr. Gopakumar and members of the Malayali Samajam, who grew concerned about Anup’s well-being. When the rescue team led by Pr. K. M. Philip reached the scene, what they discovered was nothing short of a nightmare. Anup was found immobilized near his door, surrounded by filth, with no food, water, or human care—his condition marked by severe physical and psychological decline.

Dr. Abraham Mathai, Founder-Chairman of Harmony Foundation and Chief Patron of SEAL Ashram, praised the team’s heroic efforts.
“SEAL Ashram’s timely intervention is a powerful reminder of how silent suffering still haunts many in our society. Anup’s story is not just a tale of neglect—it’s a wake-up call for us all. We cannot allow vulnerable lives to vanish behind closed doors,” said Dr. Mathai.
Anup’s descent into isolation began decades ago after the suicide of his mentally ill brother. Following the death of both parents—his mother a former Customs officer and father a Tata Group PRO—Anup slipped into complete solitude.

While some relatives tried to intervene, his deteriorating mental health and external manipulation attempts—allegedly by a woman seeking to usurp his property—only worsened his vulnerability. The SEAL Ashram team broke open the flat, cleaned and treated Anup, and transported him to their shelter for psychiatric and medical care. His apartment has been deemed unfit for human habitation.
Dr. Mathai called on citizens, human rights organizations, and government authorities to take active roles in preventing such tragedies. He emphasized that compassion must be backed by action and vigilance, as displayed by the local community members who raised the alarm.
“Let’s not just react with hashtags and sympathy. We must respond with heart and hands. SEAL Ashram has shown us the way—now it’s our turn,” Dr. Mathai urged.
Anup Kumar Nair has now begun his journey toward recovery, dignity, and hope—thanks to SEAL Ashram’s life-saving work. The case stands as a stark reminder of society’s forgotten souls—and the power of community-led rescue and care.
