A tragic accident occurred in the Lalbagh area of Mumbai on Sunday evening, just days before the start of Ganeshotsav, one of the city’s most significant festivals. The accident took place around 8:30 PM when a BEST bus, on route number 66, rammed into a crowded area, leaving eight people injured, two of whom are in critical condition. According to reports, the incident unfolded near Ganesh Talkies in Lalbagh when a passenger, identified as Datta Muralidhar Shinde, allegedly intoxicated, began arguing with the bus driver, Kamlesh Prajapati. In a sudden and reckless move, Shinde forcibly grabbed the steering wheel, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The bus swerved sharply to the left, colliding with two vehicles and hitting several pedestrians on the busy street.
The impact of the crash was severe, causing widespread panic among bystanders. The sudden swerve and the subsequent collisions led to a chaotic scene, with pedestrians scrambling to avoid the out-of-control bus. Among the eight injured, two individuals suffered serious injuries, including fractures, and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. The remaining victims sustained minor injuries and were also treated at the same facility. The quick response of the bus driver, who managed to regain control of the vehicle, helped prevent further casualties. However, the damage to the vehicles and the injuries to the pedestrians have raised concerns about public safety, especially during the festive season.
Officers from the Kalachowki police station arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. They detained Shinde, who is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time. Authorities have confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway, and legal action will be taken against the individual responsible for the accident. This incident has cast a shadow over the Ganeshotsav preparations in the Lalbagh area, where crowds are expected to swell in the coming days. The police have urged citizens to remain cautious and vigilant during the festive period to prevent such unfortunate incidents.
