Eco-Friendly Water Taxis to Connect Mumbai and Navi Mumbai in 40 Minutes

Date:

In a bid to cut travel time and ease traffic congestion, the Maharashtra government is set to launch water taxi services connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The new electric water taxis will cover the route in just 40 minutes, offering a faster, eco-friendly alternative to road travel.

The services will operate from the Radio Jetty at Gateway of India to the Navi Mumbai Airport, officials said. The electric boats will also help reduce pollution and benefit the environment.

A high-level meeting to implement the project was held on Monday, chaired by Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane. He directed officials to begin planning the service and prepare proposals for constructing jetties at key locations. The Airport Authority was also instructed to submit necessary permission requests.

The meeting, held at the Ports Department, was attended by Additional Chief Secretary of the Transport, Ports, and Civil Aviation Department Sanjay Sethi, Brijesh Singhal of the Navi Mumbai Airport Authority, Pradeep Badiye from the Maharashtra Maritime Board, and other senior officials.

Minister Rane emphasized that construction of water taxi terminals would be phased and said, “We also plan to integrate this service with the upcoming Mumbai Water Metro. This will boost connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), reduce traffic congestion, and support a cleaner environment.”
