Direct Benefit Transfer: NMMC Transfers ₹27.99 Crore in Scholarships Digitally

Date:

Navi Mumbai– The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has disbursed Rs. 27.99 crore in scholarships to 36,104 eligible students under its welfare schemes for the financial year 2024-25. This initiative, aimed at supporting students from economically weaker sections, has been executed through an entirely online process to ensure transparency and efficiency.

The Social Development Department of NMMC invited online applications for scholarships and other individual benefit schemes. A total of 43,791 applications were received under six different categories, out of which 36,104 students were found eligible as per the scheme’s criteria. The scholarship amount has been directly transferred to the students’ bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

The scheme benefits students studying in private schools (except those admitted under the Right to Education (RTE) Act) with an annual family income below Rs. 8 lakh. It also covers students belonging to backward classes, project-affected families, children of municipal sanitation and contract workers, widows and divorced women, as well as laborers from stone quarries, construction, sand mining, and other unorganized sectors within the municipal limits.

Dr. Kailas Shinde emphasized the importance of a fully digital scholarship distribution system, ensuring that the process remains streamlined, transparent, and efficient. His initiative has enabled the scholarship funds to reach students within the stipulated time frame, reducing delays and bureaucratic hurdles.

Students and parents have welcomed the initiative, expressing their satisfaction with the seamless and timely scholarship disbursement. Many have highlighted how the financial aid significantly helps them cover their educational expenses, making quality education more accessible to underprivileged students in Navi Mumbai.

This effort by NMMC reaffirms its commitment to education and social welfare, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder the academic aspirations of deserving students.
