Mumbai: With the model code of conduct in effect from October 15 for the Maharashtra assembly elections, political parties, candidates, and the general public must follow strict guidelines. There is often confusion about how much cash one can carry, especially with increased checks by the flying squads.
Dr. Kiran Kulkarni, Maharashtra’s Additional Election Officer, explained that cash, jewellery, liquor, and drugs are closely monitored during this time, as they are often used to influence voters. Citizens and businessmen carrying large amounts of cash may face scrutiny if they don’t have proper documentation.
Cash Carrying Guidelines:
Common people and businessmen are required to keep 3 documents if they have more than 50,000 rupees in cash, identity card, cash withdrawal slip and proof of where it will be used. Also, medicines and gift items worth more than Rs 10,000 are also illegal. In this case, follow these guidelines and ensure proper documentation to avoid any complications during this election period.
Enforcement Agencies:
19 agencies have been given the responsibility of investigation in the state, with 1,600 flying squads and 1,900 static surveillance teams deployed to keep an eye on 288 assembly seats. Each seat has 3 squads and surveillance teams. Apart from this, agencies like Income Tax Department, State Excise, Revenue Intelligence, Excise, CGST, SGST, Customs, Narcotics, Financial Intelligence Department, Coast Guard Force, Railway Protection Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Airport Authority of India are also involved. To date, ₹45 crore worth of cash, drugs, and other valuables have been seized across the state.
