In recent years, the number of cancer patients has increased significantly. To prevent and detect this disease at an early stage, the state health department has launched various initiatives. As part of this effort, Diagnostic Cancer Vans will be deployed across eight districts in the state for cancer screening. The Public Health Department has approved a budget of Rs 79 lakh for this initiative.
According to the health department, the Mobile Cancer Screening Van service will be implemented on a contractual basis. These vans will travel across districts to conduct screenings. The approved funds will cover expenses such as fuel and other operational costs. Citizens will undergo cancer-related tests in these vans, and if any signs of cancer are detected, patients will be referred to the district hospital for further treatment.
Proactive Measures for Cancer Prevention
The government is also taking proactive steps to prevent and treat cancer, providing relief to economically weaker patients. Every year, around 15 lakh cancer cases are detected in India, with nearly 8 lakh deaths recorded. Experts fear this number could rise to 21 lakh cases in the coming years, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial. To address this, the state government has launched a screening campaign on the occasion of World Cancer Day.
Mumbai Municipal Corporation Steps Up
The Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also focused on cancer treatment in its budget. A dedicated cancer treatment unit is being developed at Nair Hospital. In addition, Cooper Hospital will set up a 150-bed cancer ward, equipped with advanced Linear Accelerator machines for radiation therapy. Similarly, Sion Hospital will construct a separate building for cancer treatment, further strengthening the city’s healthcare infrastructure.
This initiative aims to ensure early detection and timely treatment of cancer, potentially reducing mortality rates and improving healthcare access for the underprivileged.
