Bike Taxi Services to Start Soon in Mumbai

Mumbai residents may soon get a new mode of transportation as the Maharashtra government is gearing up to approve bike taxi services in the city. On Thursday, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik stated that the approval process is progressing rapidly, and a final decision is expected in the coming days.

According to Sarnaik, bike taxis are already operational in 22 states across India, creating employment opportunities and offering cost-effective travel options. The state government has decided to launch bike taxi services in Maharashtra to generate jobs for the youth and provide affordable commuting options.

Fare Likely to be Rs 3 Per Km

The minister emphasized the importance of ensuring passenger safety, especially for women, considering the rising crime rates.

As per the information received, the fare for bike taxis is likely to be Rs 3 per kilometre. The service will come equipped with GPS tracking systems, and wearing helmets will be mandatory for pillion riders.

Companies offering bike taxi services must have a minimum fleet of 50 two-wheelers. The government aims to create 10,000 to 20,000 jobs through this initiative, with an official announcement expected soon.

Safety Guidelines Under Development

The transport department is currently working on safety guidelines to ensure passenger security before fully launching the service. The department is expected to receive approval this month, although some safety rules are yet to be finalized.
