Navi Mumbai: In a strong push toward environmental conservation and sustainable urban planning, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) organized a special workshop titled ‘Green City – Green Building’ at its headquarters under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde.
The one-day workshop, held at NMMC’s Knowledge Center, was coordinated by City Engineer Shirish Ardavad in association with the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the importance of green buildings — a concept that integrates environmental conservation, citizen welfare, efficient land use, urban transport, and infrastructure management. It also highlighted innovations in urban planning that can drive Navi Mumbai toward becoming a global model for sustainable cities.
Deputy Commissioner Sharad Pawar emphasized that sustainable infrastructure has become the need of the hour, urging officials to incorporate environmental thinking into all development projects. “We must remember that while using natural resources, we have a responsibility to leave something behind for the next generation,” he said.
Assistant Director of Town Planning Somnath Kekaan stressed that green buildings are designed to minimize environmental impact right from the construction phase and prioritize the health and well-being of occupants. He proposed that all NMMC schools be developed as green buildings to instill environmental values in students from an early age.
Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde proudly recalled that when the green building movement first gained momentum in India, NMMC’s headquarters was the country’s largest green building. He urged developers and institutions to recognize their social responsibility and adopt green building practices in future projects.
Architect Hiten Sethi, who designed the gold-rated NMMC headquarters, highlighted that India has become a leader in green urban development through IGBC’s initiatives. “This approach not only benefits the environment but also advances social welfare,” he noted, calling for continued efforts to transform Navi Mumbai into a model green city.
During the workshop, IGBC representatives Gargi Das, Asfiya Taimur, Raja Reddy, and Vikram Singha shared expert insights on various aspects of green building practices. IGBC officials also presented a special handbook on green buildings to Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde.
