In a significant step toward sustainable urban development, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has installed 290 solar-powered lights across key locations, including highway bus stops, public toilets, gardens, crematoriums, and the Dehrang Dam premises. This eco-friendly initiative reduces dependence on conventional electricity while ensuring uninterrupted illumination during power outages, enhancing safety and accessibility for residents.
Executed under the directive of Municipal Commissioner Mangesh Chitale and funded through the District Urban Development Fund, this project aligns with PMC’s vision of integrating renewable energy into urban infrastructure.
Number of LED Streetlights in Panvel
With 17,000 electricity poles and 24,000 LED streetlights in the city, PMC allocated ₹2.10 crore from the 2023-24 budget for solar lighting. The installation serves as an alternative light source during power outages, particularly at critical locations. The project was overseen by City Engineer Sanjay Katekar and Electricity Department Head Pritam Patil.
The newly installed solar lights, mounted on six-meter and eight-meter poles, feature 45-watt and 60-watt lamps, respectively. The contractor company will be responsible for maintenance and repairs for five years. Additionally, 30 solar lights have been installed at Dehrang Dam to enhance visibility in the area.
“This initiative significantly improves safety and accessibility, especially for women and those using public facilities at night,” said an official from the Civic Engineering Department. The PMC has also launched a ₹10 crore project to install high-mast 64-watt lights, further enhancing urban lighting and security.
