Panvel Municipal Corporation To Set Up Treatment Plant to Recycle 15 MLD Water

Date:

Panvel: The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reissued a tender for setting up a 15 million-liter capacity water recycling plant at the Kamothe sewage treatment center. The project, estimated at Rs 73.61 crore, aims to treat wastewater for reuse in gardens, public toilets, vehicle washing, and industries.

Water Reuse Initiative

Panvel requires 220 million liters of water daily, and the central government has mandated that 20% of the city’s water supply must be recycled. Following this directive, PMC Commissioner Mangesh Chitale launched the tender process to treat wastewater from the Kamothe facility. The earlier bidding process saw only one company expressing interest, prompting Additional Commissioner Kailas Gawde to call for fresh tenders.

Timeline and Future Plans

Once a company is selected, the project is expected to be completed in 1.5 years. The recycled water can be used for agriculture, industries, and horticulture, helping conserve drinking water. During summer, Panvel faces a 50 MLD water shortage, and this project could provide much-needed relief.

PMC also plans to set up another project to recycle 5 MLD of wastewater from Panvel City’s sewage treatment center, according to Water Supply Department Deputy Engineer Vilas Chavan.

Possible Use for Navi Mumbai Airport

If there is no urban demand for the treated water, it could be supplied for the air conditioning cooling systems at the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, as per municipal sources.
