BMC Issues Heatwave Advisory as Mumbai Braces for Rising Temperatures

Date:

Mumbai: With temperatures soaring and heatwave conditions intensifying, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued guidelines to prevent heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke. The advisory urges citizens to take necessary precautions as Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra continue to experience extreme heat.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heatwave is expected to persist until March 11, with the possibility of recurring high temperatures in March and April. In response, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Amit Saini have directed officials to implement measures to safeguard public health.

Guidelines for Heatwave Protection

The BMC’s emergency management department has outlined several preventive steps:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if not thirsty.
  • Wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothing in soft colors and use protective gear like sunglasses, umbrellas, or hats when outdoors.
  • Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks, as they contribute to dehydration.
  • Refrain from consuming stale or high-protein foods.
  • Keep your home cool by using curtains or sunshades and ensuring proper ventilation at night.
  • Use ORS, buttermilk, coconut water, and lemon water to stay hydrated.
  • Ensure that children and pets are not left in parked vehicles.

First Aid for Heatstroke

The BMC has also provided emergency measures for those affected by heatstroke:

  • Move the person to a cool, shaded area and wipe them with a wet cloth.
  • Offer ORS or any hydrating beverage to restore fluid levels.
  • Seek immediate medical attention, as heatstroke can be life-threatening.

The BMC has urged all residents to follow these precautions to avoid heat-related health risks. With the summer season intensifying, authorities emphasize the need for public awareness and timely action to prevent heatstroke and related complications.
