Navi Mumbai: As part of the initiative to enhance road safety and vehicle identification, a total of 36,100 vehicles in Navi Mumbai have been fitted with High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) so far. The installation drive, which began after the 2019 Supreme Court directive mandating HSRP for all vehicles, is being actively implemented across Maharashtra.
According to RTO officials, vehicle owners are responding positively to the campaign, which aims to standardize and secure number plates across the state. Since 2019, the Maharashtra transport department has undertaken rigorous efforts to ensure compliance. The HSRP is tamper-proof and aids in curbing vehicle theft and improving traffic management.
An HSRP camp was recently organized in Vashi, where 8,000 people registered to get HSRPs fitted on their vehicles. So far, the Vashi RTO has processed 25,408 applications, of which 14,236 number plates have already been installed.
45% of registered vehicles yet to comply
Despite the progress, 45% of vehicles in the region are yet to get HSRP plates. Officials urge vehicle owners to act promptly to avoid penalties, as the use of non-standard plates can attract fines.
Transport Officer Gajanan Gawde stated, “Before 2019, vehicles were allowed to use customized number plates, many of which were difficult to read and non-compliant. Since the HSRP initiative, we are ensuring that all vehicles are updated with standard plates. We request all vehicle owners to cooperate for better road safety.”
The drive is expected to cover all pending vehicles in the coming months, with camps and online registration facilities available for faster processing.
