In a decisive policy shift, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has banned digging newly concretized roads, ensuring long-term durability and a pothole-free experience for commuters. This monsoon, Mumbaikars may finally get relief from pothole-ridden roads as BMC pushes to complete its cement concretization project by May 31, 2025.
Strict Monitoring to Prevent Delays and Road Damage
BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani has ordered micro-planning, road-wise completion targets, and coordination with utility agencies to prevent delays. He emphasized strict enforcement of the no-digging rule by ward offices and central agencies. To maintain accountability, senior engineers will conduct surprise night inspections to monitor progress and compliance.
Utility Work Delays Addressed, Citizen Complaints Taken Seriously
During a high-level review, officials pointed to delays caused by water, sewerage, and other utility infrastructure work. Gagrani directed agencies to adhere to strict deadlines to avoid further setbacks. The BMC also acknowledged citizen complaints about missing barricades, debris, and cement-filled stormwater drains, instructing officials to take immediate corrective measures.
Safer, Well-Marked Roads for Mumbaikars
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar announced that completed roads would feature thermoplastic lane markings, zebra crossings, cat eyes, and intersection grids to improve safety and aesthetics. Contractors will also be held responsible for fixing potholes on unfinished roads before the monsoon begins.
701 km of Roads Under Construction, BMC Accelerates Work
With 701 km of roads under construction, the BMC is working at an accelerated pace to meet the deadline and ensure smoother, safer roads for Mumbai’s citizens this monsoon.
